The Story Behind Third Space Therapy
The Story So Far
Third Space Therapy began with a single picture book.
While working in a long day care centre, Linda was handed Felix and Alexander by Terry Denton—a simple story that left a lasting impression. It was the first time she truly saw how deeply a book could resonate—not only with the children listening, but with the adults reading, too. From then on, she sought out stories that offered something more: words that might spark curiosity, bring comfort, or open the door to bigger conversations.
That moment marked the beginning of a practice built on the power of story. Linda went on to complete a Master of Arts in Children’s Literature and Literacy, with a major project reading alongside hospitalised children at Royal North Shore Hospital. She later volunteered on the oncology ward at Westmead Children’s Hospital and worked on literacy initiatives in South Western Sydney—witnessing time and again how stories could connect, comfort, and help children find their voice.
Today, Linda works as a practitioner and consultant to families, educators, and early childhood professionals, using bibliotherapy and narrative therapy as her primary modalities. Whether it’s one-on-one support with a child or guiding adults to respond with insight and empathy, her work always centres on the transformative potential of stories.
Alongside Third Space Therapy, Linda continues to share this passion through her role as a tertiary supervisor with the University of Newcastle. In this hands-on role, she works with students, teachers, and families in early childhood settings to explore how narrative-based approaches can shape a child’s language, imagination, and mental wellbeing. She has also worked with Macquarie University and the Australian Catholic University in similar capacities, and remains deeply engaged in exploring the role of stories in emotional development and learning.
The Third Space Approach
At the heart of Third Space Therapy is a flexible, story-centred approach that blends therapy, consultancy, and education. Drawing on bibliotherapy and narrative therapy, Linda brings warmth, emotional intelligence, and practical insight to every child, family, or professional she supports.
This is not a one-size-fits-all model. Every session, strategy, and conversation is grounded in what will work best for each unique situation—whether that’s sitting alongside a child, consulting with parents or carers, or supporting educators to create more connected, responsive learning environments.
So what is the “third space”? It’s the place between a child’s inner world and an adult’s understanding. It’s where ideas are explored, emotions take shape, and meaningful connection begins. Support here goes beyond conversation—it’s about the deep, shared growth that happens when children feel seen and heard, and the adults around them feel confident to guide, respond, and hold space with care.
Third Space Therapy exists to hold that space—gently, thoughtfully, and always with purpose.
